摘要:

In recent years, climate variability and change have increasingly exposed vulnerabilities across multiple sectors, particularly those dependent on robust infrastructure. Beyond traditional century-scale climate projections, assessing and managing climate-related risks on near-term (1 to 10-year) scales is now essential for effective adaptation strategies. Providing accurate and actionable near-term climate predictions has thus emerged as a critical frontier in climate science. This study aims to enhance Taiwan and East Asia's resilience by delivering reliable climate predictions on a 1 to 10-year timescale. Central to improving near-term predictions is a comprehensive understanding of ocean dynamics and their accurate representation in climate models. Specifically, our research focuses on two primary objectives: firstly, assessing the predictive capability of current systems regarding multi-year to decadal climate phenomena, including El Niño-Southern Oscillation, Pacific Meridional Mode, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and North Atlantic Oscillation; and secondly, evaluating their teleconnected impacts on regional climates in East Asia and the Maritime Continent. Additionally, through collaboration with leading European climate research institutions participating in the "Impetus for Change (I4C)" project, we will evaluate and refine near-term climate forecast products specifically tailored to East Asia, leveraging advanced near-term prediction datasets developed by our European partners.
